Four Types of Respect
speaking notes

Intro
This topic entry is simply modified speaking notes.  For full verses, explanation and context, consult scriptrue.  The story of David starts in 1 Samuel 16, and continues through 2 Samuel.  When I did a study on respect, I simply walked through Davids early life for a few hours and considered the respect he showed and the resulting effect.

Examples of Respect

-The story of David shows us what God wants us to show respect towards

-And then we can look at David’s life to see that God blessed him having those 4 kinds of respect.

1) Respect of Guardians.

-Tending the sheep, even when Samuel came.

2) Respect of Peers.

-Even though oldest brother was upset, David brought his brothers supplies while they were on the battlefield.

3) Respect of God.

-God is pleased by faith. David used faith in God to defeat Goliath.

4) Respect of Authority.

-David served Saul for a long time, and as time went on, Saul became jealous of David’s victories. Saul tried to kill David over and over but David remained loyal and even with the chance to kill Saul, he refused to.

Results of Respect

-Now we can look at what God did for David because of him having these 4 kinds of respect.

1) Respect of Guardians
Because David respected his father; he gained the ability to use a slingshot to defeat Goliath later.

2) Respect of Peers
Because David brought supplies to his brothers; he gained the opportunity to defeat Goliath.

3) Respect of God
Because David killed the giant in faith; he drove the invading Philistine army off. This led to the respect of the nation, David becoming friends with Saul’s son Jonathan, who would save his life a few times, marrying Saul’s daughter, who would also save his life and promotion to commander over Saul’s war campaigns.}

4) Respect of Authority
Because David refused to hurt his leader, (Saul’s own words: “And now, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.”)

The one’s David showed respect to defiantly didn’t deserve respect, but because of it, God rewarded David greatly.

Conclusion

When we respect those the Lord places in our lives, it can open doors to continue down a road of success in Him.
